The attack occurred at Camp Singara and hit the base’s bar-restaurant. The explosion triggered a fire that affected two vehicles, but the flames were quickly brought under control, preventing them from spreading to other structures in the complex.
“We were already on pre-alert and, at around 8:30 p.m. local time, an air threat alert was activated. We reached the assigned bunkers safely,” said the base commander, Col. Stefano Pizzotti.
“Shortly before 1 a.m., an air threat, still to be determined, struck the Italian base, causing material damage to the infrastructure. Personnel are safe; everyone is fine. The origin of the threat is still unclear. Bomb disposal experts are currently on site securing the area, but the alert has been lifted,” he added.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Antonio Tajani, strongly condemned the attack on the Italian base in Erbil.
“I have just spoken with the Italian ambassador to Iraq. Fortunately, our soldiers are safe and secure in the bunker. I express my solidarity and gratitude for their daily service to the nation,” he wrote on the social media platform X.
The Italian base in Erbil is located within a complex that includes bases from other countries, so it is unclear whether the attack was aimed specifically at the Italians or at the installation in general.
On Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she remains in constant contact with the foreign and defense ministers to monitor the situation at the Erbil base.
